2024 National Baseball Federation Playoffs

The matchups are all set for the 2024 NBF Playoffs.

Aberdeen (1) and Dayton (2) will have first round byes, while Farmington (3) will take on Brooklyn (6) and Phoenix (4) will face Stuart (5).

Matt Armstrong has his Ironmen back in the playoffs for the 8th time overall and first time since 2021. When the Ironmen show up to the playoffs, it is usually as a 1 seed as this will be their 6th time as the favorite. The Ironmen have won it all four times: 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020. Ed Hirt is taking his Dragons to the playoffs for the 3rd time in franchise history and for the first time since they lost to the Blasts in the 2022 World Series. The Dragons have yet to win it all in their short time in the league. Could this be the year? Mike Mancini is taking his team to the playoffs for the 12th time and for the first time since 2021. Mike’s teams have won 2 titles (1991 & 1998) and have finished runner-up five times. Farmington is looking for some of that Mets magic. Rob Carter has his Aeros back in the playoffs for the 9th time overall and for the second consecutive season. The Aeros have won 3 NBF Championships (1995, 2008, 2009). Tait Robb has the ‘Heads in the playoffs for the third time and for the first time since 2015. Tait is seeking his first Championship. Steven Saltzman brings his Yankers to the playoffs for the 8th time in franchise history, and for the third consecutive season. The Yankers have never won an NBF title, but they were runner-up in 2006 and 2009.

Last season’s Champions, the Knowlton Rangers, came from the 6 seed. Can history repeat itself?

Congratulations to all the managers and good luck to all!

Congratulations to Matt Armstrong in leading the Ironmen to their 5th NBF title.  The Ironmen beat Ed Hirt's Dayton Dragons 4 games to 2.
Ronald Acuna was named the World Series MVP scoring 6 runs while driving in 9 runs with 4 HRs and a 1.280 OPS in the series.

Game 1 - Eflin vs Kershaw

Dayton gets on the board first with a solo HR from O'Hearn in the 3rd inning. One inning later, O'Hearn doubles home Jeffers to make it 2-0 visitors. Kershaw is dealing in the early going so the 2-0 lead remains intact through 5 innings. In the bottom of the 6th, Acuna leads off with a solo HR and Altuve follows suit with one of his own to tie the game 2-2. Dayton regains the lead in the top of the 7th with a 2-out double from Betts, scoring Wander Franco for a 3-2 Dragons lead. Aberdeen again gets a clutch HR from Altuve, this time leading off the bottom of the 8th, to tie the game 3-3. In the top of the 9th, O'Hearn walks to lead off the inning. Pinch runner Rojas advances to 2nd on Vladdy's groundout, then Rojas bravely swipes 3rd base. Wander Franco then singles Rojas home for a 4-3 Dayton lead into the bottom of the 9th. Brusdar Graterol comes on for Dayton and he gets Marsh to start the inning. Nolan Jones walks with 1 out, but Will Smith is retired. With the Dragons 1 out away from a win, Corbin Carroll comes up and doubles home Jones to tie the game 4-4 and send it to extras. Nothing for either side in the 10th. In the 11th, Guerrero singles with 1 out and then an E6 by Corey Seager puts runners at the corners. Semien hits a flyball to RF where Jones and his 36 arm are unable to nail Vladdy and his 6 speed at the plate so it's 5-4 Dayton as the aggressive baserunning pays off. In the bottom of the 11th, Milner retires Olson and Marsh but then this happens with Nolan Jones at the dish: * N. JONES facing H. MILNER, B 11th, 2 Outs, Bases Empty, Behind 4-5 The pitch ... JONES clubs a high drive ... deep to right ... it could be ... BETTS to the track wave good-bye ... it's gone! ... home run for Nolan JONES ... JONES will touch them all and he's sure taking his time Dragons 5, Ironmen 5 Absolute craziness! Top of the 12th and Evan Carter walks with 1 out. Arozarena uses the H&R to put runners on the corners. Patrick Bailey comes up huge with a 2-run double off of Armstrong (the APBA pitcher, not me) to give DAY a 7-5 lead. In the bottom of the 12th, Aberdeen's Ronald Acuna leads off with a solo HR to make it 7-6. Davis Schneider walks with 1 out, and Ha Seong Kim comes in to pinch run. The Ironmen attempt their own H&R, but Seager swings through it and Bailey guns down Kim for the 2nd out. Seager then grounds out to end G1 with a hard fought 7-6 win for Dayton.

Game 2 - Verlander vs Bradish

Aberdeen wins 13-1 as Ronald Acuna hits for the cycle and drives in 5 runs. Not much else to say here as this one was over early.

Game 3 - Woodruff vs Civale

The series moves to Dayton and the Dragons get on the board with a huge 3-run HR from Evan Carter in the top of the 1st. Corbin Carroll dials long distance with a runner aboard to close the gap to 3-2 through 2 innings. The pitchers took over from there . . . nothing across in the 3rd through 7th innings. In the top of the 8th, Altuve walks and swipes 2nd with 1 out. After Olson walks with 2 outs, Nolan Jones singles home Altuve to tie the game at 3 apiece. Dayton goes quietly in the bottom of the 8th. The top of the 9th sees Aberdeen put a huge crooked number on the board with an RBI single from Marsh, a 2-run double from Seager and another 2-run double from Nolan Jones. Aberdeen plates 5 runs, and that was all she wrote in an 8-3 Ironmen win.

Game 4 - Senga vs Eflin

A pitcher's duel in the early going as both sides put up zeroes for the first several innings. The game's first run is scored on a wild pitch by Clase, allowing Carroll to score for Aberdeen so it's 1-0 Ironmen through 6 innings. Nothing across in the 7th. In the top of the 8th, Aberdeen tacks on an insurance run as Will Smith takes Evan Phillips deep. Dayton comes roaring back in the bottom of the 8th as JD Martinez drives in Lewis to make it 2-1. then Jorge Soler doubles home pinch runner Rojas so we are tied 2-2 after 8 innings. Nothing in the 9th. Or 10th. Or 11th. Or 12th. Or 13th. Or 14th. In the 15th, Aberdeen gets a runner to 3rd with 1 out but can't cash Marsh in. Dayton, however, does not make the same mistake as Wander Franco's sac fly scores Rojas to give the Dragons a 3-2 win. Brusdar Graterol pitches 6.2 shutout innings to earn the win and tie the series at 2-2.

Game 5 - Kershaw vs Verlander

The teams trade a bunch of single runs in the early going so it's 2-2 through 7 innings. Both teams needed some length from their starters and they got it, with Kershaw going 6 innings and Verlander 7.2 innings. In the top of the 8th, Aberdeen gets a 2-run HR from Marcell Ozuna and another 2-run HR from Acuna to blow things open. Dayton did get a run back in their half of the 8th, and got the tying run to the dish, but they got no closer and Aberdeen wins 6-3 behind some late power.

Game 6 - Eflin vs Bradish

It's must-win time for Dayton but Bradish is shaky in the early going, surrendering an RBI single to Olson in the 1st and a couple of runs in the 2nd thanks in part to an E6 by Wander Franco and a clutch RBI from Casali - it's now 3-0 Aberdeen through 2 innings. (Editor's note: I forgot to mention that both Yandy Diaz (10 day injury in G1) and Will Smith (15 day injury in G5) have gone down with long injuries in this series so it's Casali at catcher all the way at this point for Aberdeen.) Vlad belts a 2-run HR in the 5th to close the lead to 3-2, then later in the inning Austin Riley's RBI groundout ties it at 3 apiece. In the bottom of the 5th, Evan Phillips retires the first 2 batters before Matt Olson dials long distance to put Aberdeen back in front 4-3. After a scoreless 6th, the Ironmen tack on an insurance run in their half of the 7th as Seager's sac fly scores Casali to make it 5-3 Aberdeen. GM Armstrong brings on pitcher Armstrong for the top of the 8th, and he retires the side in order. Aberdeen goes quietly in their half, so we are off to the 9th. Shawn Armstrong comes back out for the 9th, and he whiffs O'Hearn; Vlad scorches one right at Olson for the 2nd out, then Wander Franco grounds out to Henderson to end the game, the series and the season. The Ironmen hang on for a 5-3 win and take the World Series 4 games to 2.
